The University of Texas at El Paso

Homepage & Academic Programs

Project Overview:
The objective was to redesign the University homepage and to create a new “academic programs” section. Our primary audience were prospective students. The ultimate goal of this project was to connect with prospective students through one of these interactions: form submission, request more financial or program information, and start the application process.
My Roles:
UX Research, UX design, UI Design, Front-end Developer, Project Manager.

Project Duration:
Jan 2021 – Jan 2022

Situation

The existing homepage was the result of a design-by-committee process, resulting in an unfocused user experience that attempted to serve multiple audiences simultaneously. It failed to effectively target and engage its primary audience: prospective students. The homepage was overcrowded with hundreds of unused  links, it contained  multiple sections resulting in a huge vertical length when +90% of the users never scrolled past the second section, it didn’t have a user journey focused on new students and didn’t have a strategy or goals.

Objectives

  • Redesign the homepage with prospective students as the primary audience
  • Streamline the information architecture to highlight academic programs
  • Optimize the conversion funnel for student enrollment
  • Improve overall user engagement metrics

Result

We launched a redesigned homepage very different from other universities. The  bold and innovative redesign of our homepage was the product of a user-centered design approach that prioritizes the needs of the prospective students and validated through a comprehensive data analysis.

It exceeded our initial objectives, significantly increasing engagement with prospective students. It successfully converted a higher than anticipated number of visitors into  prospective students.

Measurable improvements:

  • Increased prospective student engagement
  • High conversion rates
  • Improved performance metrics
  • Met accessibility standards, and optimized experience for users using the  keyboard to navigate the page.
